Joy began her love affair with make-up when, as a sportswear model she recognised the incredible power of make-up. She realised that although the model gets the publicity, it was the make-up artist working with other members of the photographic team who created the images seen. Models have been born with good bone structure, but it is up to the make-up artist to transform them. Joy decided that her chosen path would be using her artistic flair to make many different images, on many different faces. A decision she has never regretted, as make-up has become her lifelong passion.

Unlike many make-up artists who, when complimented on their artistry and asked how they achieved it, may reply 'It's my secret.' Joy has always been keen to share her knowledge with others so that they could achieve better results. This desire to share her skills with others, led her to open the Make-up School, and subsequently the PMU Beyond Artistry Online School. Joy constantly challenges herself and those either working or studying with her to push their boundaries and widen their horizons. Joy does not believe you can grow and develop if you do not work hard and step outside your comfort zone. She has very high standards that her students have to attain to be successful.

Joy is a very skilled presenter of Make-up Workshops which thousands of women over the years have attended. Magazines have clamoured for her to repeat them as her knowledge and enthusiasm about make-up has made her so popular with participants, who cannot believe how much they can learn about make-up from her at just a workshop.

Joy's creative skills are further satisfied by her hobbies of painting, sculpting and doing mosaics. Working in a mainly female environment, Joy has a male dominated home life. A highly supportive husband, 2 teenage sons and 4 male dogs! All of whom share her love of walking and mountain biking in the vineyards surrounding her home in Cape Town.

Joy's advice to those considering a make-up career . . .

'People who have a creative and artistic flair are often attracted to the make-up industry. However, those with an eye to detail and good co-ordination, also often become successful make-up artists, finding their training taps into unknown creative depths. Make-up artistry is a profession, therefore there are standards of conduct and ethics that you should be prepared to adhere to. You need hard work and dedication to be really successful. You will need to practise and practise, on as many faces as possible.

If you do decide on a make-up career choose your school carefully. Make sure that the training will equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge to be able to work as a professional make-up artist in the fashion world. If you are not familiar with the make-up industry it is easy to make the mistake that a reputable school will give you these. Many beauty school graduates unfortunately discover that although they may have an international qualification, they have not received sufficient specialised make-up training to be able to work in the fashion world. You do not want to waste your time and money on achieving less than the best.

You must also consider what your chosen field in the make-up industry is likely to be. PMU Beyond Artistry specialises in the fashion world. If want to do beauty therapy combined with make-up, a general beauty school might be more suitable for your needs.'

A serious misconception about a Career in Fashion and Film make-up . . .

'Make-up Artistry appears to be an easy way to access the exciting beauty, fashion, TV and film industry. It is for this reason that a career in make-up appeals to so many fashion and beauty lovers. Sadly however, many make-up and beauty schools are taking advantage of this market! If you do not know the industry, it is easy to make the mistake of assuming that a reputable beauty school will equip you with the necessary knowledge to work as a professional make-up artist in the fashion or film industry. Unfortunately, many beauty school graduates discover, after having studied for two to three years, that although they are now equipped with an international qualification, they have not received sufficient specialized make-up training to enter the fashion or film industry. If you are considering a career in the fashion or film industry, choose your training institution very carefully.'

Finding the Best make-up training available . . .

'If your intention is to work in the fashion industry, I would advise that you base your decision on whether your lecturers have work experience in the fashion industry and can fully prepare you for the minimum standards required for fashion shoots, commercials, etc. In our experience, we find the best artists develop under the best teachers! It is not necessarily a particular training institution.'

Natural artistic talent is certainly an asset, but it is the hard work and practice put in by the student herself, under the guidance of an older experienced artist, which develops the individual into a fully-fledged make-up artist. If the people responsible for the structure and running of the courses are too young, lack experience or are not themselves true artists, there is little hope of producing a truly professional make-up artist.

A diploma from the most well-known training institution amounts to nothing in the eyes of the fashion and TV industry, if the artist's portfolio does not meet their criteria. The make-up artist's credibility is based on her portfolio, make-up abilities and not on her certificates!
